Cartoonist: Charles Schulz

Charles Schulz is a true hero. For nearly 50 years, Schulz's comic strip, the Peanuts collection has been the most well-known cartoon in the world. It has 355 million daily readers in 75 countries. On February 13th, 2000, Schulz died of cancer. But he will always be remembered by people old and young worldwide.

In Schulz's works, he always stayed positive. He tried to give readers a happy feeling. Kids like Peanuts because the characters live a simple life and go through the same troubles as they do. He did not pick out stressful topics of the day. Instead, he always brought readers into a joyful world by writing about a happy place with simple worries.

Schulz was also a good father of four children. It's said that he never failed to stop his work to play a pick-up baseball game or have lunch with his family. He was always very involved in his children's lives and supported their decisions. He taught them the importance of a person's inner worth. His family describes Schulz as a man with the fewest needs.

His youngest daughter, Jill, said, "He's a fighter, but he always has bad luck." When Schulz leamed his cancer was senous, he was forced to give up the job he loved - writing the Peanuts cartoons. Unluckily, Schulz died the night before the last strip of his comics came out in the Sunday papers. Some might say this was unlucky, but Jill said her father enjoyed spending his whole life writing to make people happy.

Something changed a few years ago. Around 2012, teens started to spend their time much differently from the generation before. I started to notice big difference in teen’s b1.and attitudes in the yearly survey of 11 million young people.

A 2017 survey found that two out of three U.S. teens owned an iphone. For this reason, l call them iGen (iphone generation).

What makes iGen different?

Growing up with a smart phone has affected nearly every aspect of their lives. They spend so much time on the internet, texting friends and on social media, an average of about six hours per day, so they have less free time for everything else. That i2.going to parties, shopping at the mall or watching movies with their friends. These were o3.the favorite activities of most teens. But now iGen teens are taking part in these social activities at lower rate than others.

A link that should be noticed

I wondered if these changes might be c4.to their deteriorating(退化)mental health. Sure enough, I found that teens who spend more time on screens are less happy and more disappointed. Meanwhile, a 2017 study asked some adults to give up Facebook felt happier, less l5.and less disappointed during the week as they had more free time for social activities like meeting friends, watching movies, etc.

What else is lost?

Spending less time with friends means less time to develop social abilities. A 2016 study showed that the sixth graders who spent just five days at a camp w6.using screens ended time better at reading expressions on others’ faces.

That isn’t to say that iGen teens don't have a7.. They are physically safer and more tolerant (寬容). They also seem to have a stronger work spirit and more realistic expectations. To

my surprise, the iGen teens I interviewed said they preferred seeing their friends in person to communicating with them using their phones.

But it might be just what iGen needs.

Building Your Business, Building Your People

What an exciting thing to do — developing a successful business! I’m reminded every day of some important ideas for progress. Here are some ideas to keep in mind that can make a significant difference in a team:

Understand your people

If I want my team to go and grow with me, I need to find out what excites them. What do they need in their work environment to improve their mental well-being? What are their fears and concerns, and how can I help them manage these fears and concerns? What are their values and goals?

Help people build self-confidence

During my early years in management, I realized the great power of expectations. As I found, people largely lived up to my expectation of them. So I learned that if I want to build my business through my people, I have to build their own belief in their ability to achieve. This belief must be educated. If I want them to achieve more, I must help them build their trust in themselves first.

Develop people’s recognition (認(rèn)可)

Whenever I speak and give advice to people, they tell me they don’t get enough recognition. Sad, isn’t it? But how much recognition do they give to others? In fact, recognition could be developed by praising and appreciating each other in a team. Encourage everyone in your team to recognize achievements in others. Teach your team to ask for the opinions of others if they’re not receiving recognition.

Encourage people to be creative

We have created our life just the way we choose to have it, or at least the way we’ve settled for it. Those who have been told they are creative will probably use their creativity bravely. Others who haven’t had their creativity encouraged will mostly believe they are uncreative. I suggest you encourage your people to be creative and brave in trying out new ideas.
