The Picture-Taking Man

In Harlem, people call James Van Der Zee “the picture-taking man.” Harlem is a part of New York City. James came to Harlem from Lenox, a town in Massachusetts. He was the first person in Lenox to own a camera. That was in 1901. James was 14 then. He took pictures of his family and other people in Lenox.

James moved to Harlem in 1908. Many young black people were moving there. He wanted to play music, not take pictures. After six years, he opened his first picture-taking shop. He could make more money selling his pictures than playing music.
