A Little Coaching (指導(dǎo))
I always felt nervous at the running race. I was too thin to be an athlete. So when our class needed a ________ in the two mile race around the lake, I hoped ______ would notice me.
I hid under a ________ when our teacher Bronto called the names of the runners. I got more nervous when I heard he called, “Noah! Where’s Noah? He’s in this race!”
He saw me under the tree and shouted, “Noah, we ________ a boy to run the two mile race.” He pushed me to the starting line. I pleaded(懇求) with him. “I don’t know the way around the lake!”
“It’s not a problem. Just _______ Craig and you’ll know the way.” Bronto smiled. Craig was the fastest runner in our class. Then Bronto said, “For the last hundred meters, ______ throw your head back and run.”
I stood next to Craig and trembled(顫抖). Then I heard the gun and sixteen of us started to run. I ran ______ behind Craig.
But gradually(逐步地), the distance(距離) between Craig and me became wider.
It was ______. I felt very tired. My energy was spent. I was about to ______. But then I looked ahead(向前) and _______ only three boys were in front of me. The crowd was shouting, but I could hear Bronto shouting, “Run!”
I threw my head back and told my legs to go. I never looked ahead and I never looked back for those last hundred meters. I felt ________. Nobody was telling me what I was, or what I wasn’t. My legs were running a race against my brain and I was winning!
I didn’t know when I crossed the finishing line. Bronto caught me and shouted, “You flew! You flew, man! ________! You passed two boys!”
However, the best prize that I got was _______. That year I discovered I could do a lot ______ I believe myself and put my energy into them.
I never got to say goodbye to Bronto right after the race. But later, I saw him over the lake. He was coaching another kid. I had no ______ that the kid was also going to win.

For people who are interested in space, nothing is more exciting than the idea of living on other planets. That might be why the movie The Martian is so popular. It shows an astronaut living on Mars. But would it really be possible to live on the Red Planet?
While the idea of living on Mars is great, the reality does not look as good. Mars does not have a friendly air for humans. There is very little oxygen(氧氣) there. And because it's far from the sun, it is also very cold. The temperature on Mars can be ?62 on average. This is much too cold for humans.
However, scientists say it might be possible to live there even without a good air. Daytime on Mars is almost the same as Earth's. It means there's enough sunlight to grow plants inside safe buildings. However, they would have to grow in soil from Earth. Mars does not have a strong enough air to stop the radiation(輻射) coming from space, which makes it dangerous to grow things in the soil.
The radiation also causes problems for our health. One way we could live there would be to build homes under ground or within the rocks on the planet. This would give humans the protection(保護(hù)) from the radiation and also some heat.
When could we live on Mars? NASA is hoping to make some progress within the next 20 years.
1.Which of the following about Mars is TRUE?
A. Its air is good for humans. B. It has enough oxygen on Mars.
C. It's a little colder than Earth. D. It's not close to the sun.
2.Why is it possible to grow plants on Mars?
A. Because there is enough sunlight.
B. Because the soil is good on Mars.
C. Because it has little oxygen there.
D. Because it has the strong radiation.
3.What's the passage mainly about?
A. How to grow plants on Mars.
B. How to live on Mars without danger.
C. How to keep warm on Mars.
D. How to improve the air on Mars.

Chris is not a traditional explorer(探險者)—he usually works in an office for a large organization.Yet his job can sometimes be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer.
Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders (無國界醫(yī)生).MSF sends trained doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster.Chris is a doctor from France who has travelled to many places to organize programmes that help people.
At the moment, there are over 27,000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF.They need to be prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should expect difficult conditions.Doctors with experience in tropical(熱帶的) diseases are especially useful because most of MSF’s work is in Africa. When MSF accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience you gain is a great help in your career.Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an open mind and learn to mix well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made a real difference to people’s lives.
