The war had begun, and George had joined the air force. He wanted to be a pilot, and after some months he managed to get to the air force training school, where they taught pilots to fly.
There, the first thing that new students had to do was to be taken up in a plane by an experienced (有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的) pilot, to give them some idea of what it felt like. Even those who had travelled as passengers in commercial (商業(yè)的) airline planes before found it strange to be in the cockpit(座艙) of a small fighter plane, and most of the new students felt nervous.
The officer who had to take the students up for their first flight allowed them to fly the plane for a few seconds if they wanted to and if they were not too frightened (害怕) to try, but he was always ready to take over as soon as the plane started to do dangerous things.
George was one of those who took over the controls of the plane when he went up in it for the first time, and after the officer had taken them from him again, George thought that he had better ask a few questions to show how interested he was and how much he wanted to learn to fly. There were a number of instruments(儀器) in front of him, so he chose one and asked the officer what it was.
The officer looked at him strangely for a moment and then answered, “That-is the clock. ”

You may have never heard of Ladislao Biro, but you have certainly heard of the pen he invented—the ballpoint pen, or biro. Before Biro invented his pen, people wrote with fountain pens. The ink sometimes went out. In the 1930s Biro was a magazine editor in Budapest in Hungary. He noticed that the inks which the magazine’s printers used dried very quickly.Biro wondered if quick-drying ink could be used in pens. He came up with the idea of a tube(管) of ink with a free-moving ball on the end. As a person wrote, the ball collected ink from the rube and rolled(滾動(dòng)) it on to the paper. The pen would be cheap and could be thrown away when the ink ran out.
Biro began to work on his invention, but the Second World War broke out before he could patent(取得…的專利) it. Biro left war-torn Europe and went to Buenos Aires in Argentina. There, he and his brother George, who was a chemist, began to improve the pen. In the early 1940s Biro began to produce his new pen, the biro. In 1944, he sold his invention to another company, who began to mass-produce the pen for the British and American armed forces(武裝部隊(duì)).
Biro was pleased that his pen was popular, but he did not gain much from his invention. The biro was later sold to the French firm, Bic, who now sell twelve million pens a day. Biro sank into obscurity in South America. His name, however, has become a household word.
