　　There is not enough oil in the world now．As time goes by ,it becomes less and less ,so what are we going to do when it runs out? Perhaps we will go back to use horses ,carriages and bicycles．

　　In the Second World War ,some people didn＇t use gas made from petroleum(石油)in their cars．They made gas from wood and plants instead．The cars didn＇t go fast ,but they ran ,so this was better than nothing．However, in the future, we can＇t cut down all our trees to make gas; we need our trees for other things, too．

　　Besides different types of gas, we can also use electricity(電)to run our cars but first we must make the electricity! Some countries have coal and they make electricity with that, but we might not always have coal, either．Other countries have big ,strong rivers and they can use the power of water to turn turbines(渦輪機)and make electricity more easily and cheaply．

　　We are also able to get power from the ocean tides．We put turbines into the mouth of the river．Then the tide comes in ,the water turns the turbines and then it goes out ,it turns them again．

　　The worst danger is a house on fire when people are asleep．Always be ready to leave through a window into the garden by making sure you can open it if necessary．If you should be on holiday in a tall building or hotel,make sure you know where the fire easape(太平梯)is．When you can't find any way out,try to find pieces of cloth and make a rope to get out of a window to safety．If you smell burning in your home,get out right away．If you can't breathe properly because of smoke on your way out, crawl(爬行)on your hands and knees because smoke rises and the air will be cleaner near the floor．Smoke is a killer and more people have died from breathing it in than actually being burnt．

　　Fire in a cinema,hall or public place often means people pushing to reach a door．Keep your head up with arms up in front of your chest(胸)．This protects your chest and gives you the best chance to breathe．Above all, don't get frightened!

　　As an important guest of the 8th Shanghai International Film Festival top Hollywood star Mr．Morgan FREEMAN arrived in Shanghai yesterday morning．Without time even to adjust to the time difference he attended the press conference of the premiere of BATMAN BEGINS．His courtesy, modesty, and humour at the conference greatly impressed the journalists present．

　　At the press conference the first question Freeman faced was about his "weakness．" Freeman himself once said that he had never played a character in love with a woman, which was a great pity．When asked about this he explained that he had played in stage productions for 20 years before joining the film circle at the age of over 50．This explains why he has had so little love interest in his films．

　　Since he joined the film world Freeman has been accepted by the audience as a persevering, resourceful, and humourous figure．Though he is regarded as a top star, the number of the films in which he has played leading roles is not big．He has been nominated for an Oscar several times, but has only won once：Best Supporting Actor in MILLION DOLLAR BABY．This caused a lot of disappointment among his fans, but Freeman himself does not consider an Oscar as the only mark of a successful actor．He said that for those attending the Festival in Shanghai it should be not just to win a prize, but also to communicate with others in the film world．

　　Talking about the Oscar he won for his latest film MILLION DOLLAR BABY, he said that an Oscar is an award of great importance for all actors and actresses, but especially for the younger ones because it can lead to a successful reputation．But he doesn't consider this so important for himself．His own favourite role in his career was in STREET SMART, also nominated for an Oscar．This role was very different to his own personality．It was a pity that this film did not attract much attention．

　　He likes acting in films, and spares no effort in learning his part．When asked which he liked better, comedy or tragedy, he said he had no special feeling, for he was an 'actor' rather than a 'comedy actor' or 'tragedy actor．' He could not tell which was more difficult, although he did say that to find a feeling for the character is important．He summarised the secret of successfully portraying a character as believing in all good things in life．

　　Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become " computer－literate"．But not all experts agree that this is a good idea．

　　One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computer town UK．Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer, David does not see it that way．He says that Computer town UK was formed for just the opposite reason, to bring computers to people and make them" people－literate"．

　　David Tebbutt thinks Computer towns are most successful when tied to a computer club but he insists there is an important difference between the two．The clubs are for people who have some computer knowledge already．This frightens away non－experts, who are happier going to Computer towns where there are computers for them to experiment on, with experts to encourage them and answer any questions they have．They are not told what to do, they find out．The computer experts have to learn not to tell people about computers, but have to be able to answer all questions people ask．People don't have to learn computer terms(術語), but the experts have to explain in simple language．The computers are becoming "people－literate"．

　　After a hard campaign, Barack Obama won the US president election on November 4．He will become the 44th President of the United States－the first African－American in the country's history．

　　On the election eve, Obama's grandmother died－only a few days before seeing her grandson's victory．Tears ran down the face of Obama as he spoke about his grandmother．“She taught me about hard work．．She was the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life．She poured everything she had into me．”

　　In his first speech as the president, Obama declared to tens of thousands of cheering supporters, “…The road ahead will be long．Our climb will be steep．We may not get there in one year, or even one term, but America－I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there．I promise you：We as a people will get there…” The crowd broke out into the same chant(詠唱，吟誦), “Yes, we can!”

　　Those three short words have become the defining phrase of Obama's campaign．

　　Forty－five years ago, Martin Luther King had a dream of an America where men and women would be judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character．Today the dream has come true．
