The Turning of the Earth

It seems to us that the earth stands quite still. But it is really moving all the time. It turns around a make-believe line through its centre. We call this make-believe line the earth's axis (地軸). The two ends of the earth's axis are called its poles. It makes the earth twenty-four hours travel around its axis once.

We look at the sun and say it “rises” and travels across the sky, but the sun doesn't really do so. It is the turning of the earth which makes us feel as if the sun were moving across the sky. We can't see that the earth is moving because everything else on the earth is turning with us. As the earth turns around every twenty-four hours, first one half faces the sun and then the other half. When our half of the earth is facing the sun, we say it is day. When our half is away from the sun, we say it is night. It is the turning of the earth that, tells us when to go to bed and when to get up.

B.When the earth faces us we have “day”, and when the earth runs away from us we have “night”.

C.When the part of the earth turns to the sun we have “night”, and when our part of the earth turns away from the sun we have “day”.

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory (記憶力) works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance (機(jī)會) to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is not his own fault (過錯). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that it is just his own fault.

Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they can not read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people; practise remembering.

1.The main reason (原因) for one's poor memory is that ________.

[ ]

A.his father or mother may have a good memory

B.he does not use his arms or legs for some time

[ ]

A.you can't use them any more

B.they will become stronger

3.Which of the following is NOT true?

[ ]

A.Your memory works in the same way as your arms or legs.

B.Your memory, like your arms or legs, becomes weak if you do not give it enough chance for practice.

C.Don't learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory.

D.A good memory comes from more practice.

4.Some people can't read or write, but they usually have better memories, because ________.

[ ]

A.they have saved much trouble

B.they have saved much time to remember things

C.they have to use their memories all the time
