All living things need light and heat from the sun to live. Plants need light and heat to grow. They use the light from the sun to make food. We cannot make our own food, but plants can. All the food we eat comes from plants in a food chain (鏈) which starts with the sun. For example.

Animals need sunlight, too. Just like us, their food comes from a food chain which begins with the sun and the plants.

  sun→leaf→caterpillar (毛蟲)→bird

  sun→seaweed(海藻)→small fish→whale (鯨)

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St Albans-a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. Meeting the English family

Rosa and her classmates were in a street in West London. The sky was dark. This was Rosa's big day-her first day in England.

Rosa got out of a taxi. The driver carried a very heavy bag for her. They walked through the rain to the front door of a big Victorian house.

A small girl opened the door. She was four years old. Her brother stood behind her. He was only two years old. One minute later, a young woman came to the door.

“Welcome to Wembley!” she said and she offered Rosa her hand. “These are my two children, Elisabeth and Isaac.”

“Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Frost!” said Rosa with a strong Spanish accent.

The two children ran back into the living-room.

“Don't worry about them! They're a little shy. And please call me Diana! Now let me show you your room and then we can have a nice cup of tea. Or would you like some coffee?”

“I'd like to try a cup of English tea, made in England.”

“This is your bedroom. There's a nice view(視野) of the football stadium(露天體育場) and here's a little desk where you can study. The bathroom and toilet are just opposite your door. Now I'll go and put the kettle on.”

  “Excuse me. What's a kettle?”

“In England, we use a kettle to make hot water. We can then put the hot water in a teapot or use it to make coffee.”

Rosa was happy with her new home, but she was a little puzzled(困惑的). Perhaps her mother Maruja was right. The British were not normal people. They did not kiss when they met and they lived in large Victorian palaces. Their favourite drink was tea and they used strange metal kettles to make the weather hot. What was she going to say to Elisabeth and Isaac? How could she make friends with two shy English children? Perhaps the answer was in the big, black psychology(心理學) book.

1.It was Ross's big day. She and her classmates were in ________.

[ ]

A.the west part of London

B.the middle of Spain

C.a(chǎn) big Victorian house

D.the living-room

D.Maruja Frost

3.What could Rosa see through the window when she was in her bedroom?

[ ]

A.A garden.
B.A football stadium.
C.A desk.
D.A bathroom.

4.In this passage the underlined(劃底線的) word “it” means ________.

[ ]

A.a(chǎn) cup
B.hot water
C.a(chǎn) teapot
D.milk

5.After reading the passage, we know that ________.

閱讀下面短文,從短文后各題所給的四個選項(A)、(B)、(C)和(D)中,選出可以完成句子或回答所提問題的最佳選項,并填寫在題前括號內(nèi)。

It's important to learn about protecting our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us:

  1.Reduce

If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely(明智的). A large number of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throw it out, soon we would not have any trees left. Other things are also being wasted, and people don't know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary to reduce the waste.

  2.Reuse

You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give your clothes you do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.

  3.Recycle

Bottles, cans(罐子) and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so we save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat(壓平) and melted(融化) and the metal things are made for new coke cans.

  4.Recover

When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐爛的) apples, you have two choices: one is to throw the whole apples away, or you could cut off the rotten parts and use the good parts. In this way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.

  5.Repair

If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it. If you want to change for better ones, it is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repair. It is true that North America is a “throw-away” society, but the time has come to change our way of life so that we can protect our environment. Every one of us should try our best.

1.The “Reduce” rule mainly requires(要求) us ________.

[ ]

A.to use things wisely

B.to cut down many trees

C.to use a lot of paper

D.to throw away your old clothes

2.What's the right order(順序) of recycling coke cans?

[ ]

a.collect the used cans
b.melt them
c.smash them flat
d.send them to a factory

[ ]

A.a(chǎn) b c d
B.a(chǎn) d c b
C.d b c a
D.c a b d

3.The “Recover” rule mainly requires us ________.

[ ]

A.to throw waste things away

B.to cover waste things with earth

C.to get back the useful parts

D.to throw the whole things away

4.Which is the best way to do with your broken tables?

[ ]

A.Throwing them away.
B.Repairing them.
C.Selling them.
D.Putting them away.
