Dear Jeremy and Alice,
Although we've been delighted to have you as neighbors, we're hoping to settle something that bothers to us. In a word, your dog—Cleo.
We've called several time about Cleo's early morning barking. It is difficult to understanding why she barks every minute she's outside. The early morning barking have been disturbing us as we are often up all night with the baby. Beside, Cleo tends to bark a average of six hours a day. This morning she starts barking even before 5 o'clock. That is too much for us, considering how closely the houses are.
We appreciate our apologies and goodwill, but we hope that you can figure a good way of settling the matter.
Sincerely,
Jack and Rose

The International Painting Contest on Google’s homepage in 2015 may look pretty strange, but it spotlightings a very serious issue:clean water, which is unusual for an 11-year-old from Long Island.
Audrey Zhang,a fifth-grader from Levittown,N.Y,is the winner of this year’s Doodle 4 Google contest, rising to the top of some 100,000 entries on the theme of“draw one thing to make the world a better place.”

When humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life.”

Good news for giant panda lovers: The cute and cuddly creature has just been brought back from the brink of extinction.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) downgraded the species from “endangered” to “vulnerable” as the union released its updated Red List on Sept 4 at Hawaii.
The downgrade came after IUCN data suggested that there were 1,864 giant pandas in the wild in China in 2014 — their population has grown by 17 percent in the decade leading up to 2014.
Chinese conservation efforts, including forest protection and reforestation, are considered to be the driving force behind the animal’s resurgence.
“It’s all about restoring the habitats,” Craig Hilton-Taylor, head of the IUCN Red List, told the BBC.
The number of panda reserves in China has also jumped to 67, from 13 in 1992. Nearly two-thirds of all wild pandas live in these reserves, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
“Just by restoring the panda’s habitat, that’s given them back their space and made food available to them,” Hilton-Taylor said.
A loss of habitats, on the contrary, was what caused the number of pandas to drop to just over 1,200 in the 1980s, Hilton-Taylor added.
Apart from giant pandas, the Tibetan Antelope has also moved from “endangered” to “near threatened”. According to a statement from IUCN, the animal’s numbers dwindled severely — dropping from around 1 million to an estimated 65,000-72,500 in the 1980s and early 1990s — due to commercial poaching. Rigorous(嚴格的) protection has since been enforced to protect the beasts and the population is now likely to be between 100,000 and 150,000.
Despite the improved statuses, wild animals like the giant panda and the Tibetan Antelope still face great challenges. The IUCN warned, for example, that ongoing threats from climate change could eliminate more than 35 percent of the panda’s bamboo habitat in the next 80 years, which would reverse the species recent gains.

A. Better climate.B. More built reserves.

【4】What does the last paragraph imply?

【題目】A
The first ancient Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BC. Coroebus won the only event at the Olympics. This made him the very first Olympic champion in history. Then they grew and continued to be played every four years. In 393 AD, the Roman emperor Theodosius Ⅰ, a Christian, announced to end the Games because of their pagan (異教的) influences.
About 1,500 years later, a young Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin began their revival (恢復). In 1892 Coubertin first brought forward his idea to revive the Olympic Games but failed.
Two years later, Coubertin organized a meeting with 79 delegates (代表) who represented nine countries. At this meeting he got what he wanted. All the delegates at the conference voted for the Olympic Games. They also decided to have Coubertin set up an international committee to organize the Games. This committee became the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Demetrious Vikelas from Greece was selected to be its first president. Athens was chosen for the revival of the Olympic Games and the planning was begun.
The very first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April, 1896. Since the Greek government had been unable to afford a stadium, a rich Greek architect, Georgios Averoff, donated one million drachmas (over $100,000) to repair the Panathenaic Stadium, originally built in 330 BC.
Since the Games were not well publicized internationally, contestants (選手) were not nationally chosen but rather came individually and at their own expense. Some contestants were tourists who happened to be in the area during the Games.

【題目】As early as the mid-18th century, some people began raising doubts about Marco Polo’s travels. In 1995, historian Frances Wood argued in her book Did Marco Polo Go to China? that the famous explorer from Venice never made it to pass the Black Sea. She noted that his travel journal left out the Great Wall of China, chopsticks and tea drinking among other details. Furthermore, Chinese documents from Polo’s day made no mention of the explorer and his men.
Wood and other scholars have argued that Marco Polo based his tales of China on information collected from fellow trades who had actually been there. Last year, a team of Italian researchers became the latest to challenge Polo’s accounts(敘述). They said that evidence didn’t support his description of Kublai Khan’s Japanese invasions (侵略).
Now, however, research by Hans Ulrich Vogel of Germany’s Tubingen University might help prove Marco Polo was true. In a new book Marco Polo Was in China, the professor of Chinese history tries to prove that Marco Polo spoke the truth. He suggests, for example, that Polo didn’t include the Great Wall in his book because it only achieved its great importance in the Ming Dynasty several hundred years later. Vogel further explains that Chinese records from the 13th and 14th centuries avoided setting down visits from Westerners.
Historians before him have touched on these issues. But Vogel also relies on another evidence:the explorer’s very detailed descriptions of currency and salt production in the Yuan Dynasty. According to Vogel, Polo documented these aspects of Mongol Chinese culture in greater detail than any other of his time. This is a hint (暗示) that Polo relied on his own powers of observation.
Will we ever know whether Marco Polo traveled to China? Perhaps not, but the consequences of his real or fictional journey are still felt across the globe. One reader of The Travels of Marco Polo was Christopher Columbus, who stepped upon the New World while following his idol’s footsteps.
【1】France Wood doubted Marco Polo’s travel’s to China because his description ________.
A. missed some important culture of China
B. covered so much about traders’ life
C. was full of obvious mistakes
D. seemed less detailed
【2】Vogel’s trust on Marco Polo is based on the argument that ________.
a. The Great Wall didn’t gain its importance then
b. Records in the Yuan Dynasty mentioned Polo
c. Polo mentioned the currency and salt
d. Polo’s other works are believable
e. Polo recorded what he saw in great detail
A. a, b, dB. a, c, dC. a, e D. b, c
