At long last, Stefano Boeri Architects’ brilliant Bosco Verticale towers are finally completed. The “world’s first vertical forest” consists of a fantastic pair of costly towers that add nearly 2.5 acres of lush vegetation to the sky line of Milan, a city notorious (聲名狼藉的) for its air pollution. 1. Like a pair of green lungs, its forested appearance of 21,000 plants will absorb CO2, control noise pollution, lessen the urban heat island effect, and create oxygen and favorable micro-climates.

The Bosco Verticale mixed-use towers are constructed with a $2.5 billion public-private investment as part of the re-development of Milan’s Porta Nuova district. The towers, measuring 260 feet and 367 feet, house 800 trees between 9 and 30 feet tall, over 4,000 shrubs (灌木) and 15,000 ground cover plants. Bosco Verticale is created with LEED Gold Certification (綠色建筑黃金認(rèn)證) in mind. 2.

The buildings shrub have welcomed their first residents. 3. A fast-growing bird population has already begun to nest in Bosco Verticale’s rich leaves, of which over a hundred different species of trees and shrubs are represented. 4.

The superstructure is also selected for the world famous International Highrise Building Award as one of the five most beautiful and original high-rises in the world that is completed. 5.

A. “We take great pride in this project, which may earn us an award” says Boeri.

B. Boeri is currently in China, where he plans to build another Bosco Verticale project.

C. It is also equipped with a gray water recycling and irrigation system.

D. However, Bosco Verticale will be more than just a beautiful sight to enjoy.

E. “The real key to this project is biodiversity,” says Boeri.

F. It is also well received by the Chinese experts in the field.

G. But those families aren’t the only ones to call the vertical forest home.

Given the tradition of students bringing apples to their teachers, it somehow seems fitting that an old apple barn(谷倉)will find a new life as a one-room schoolhouse. And it is just as fitting that a retired schoolteacher will become the caretaker of that historic treasure.

My friend Velma, a teacher for more than 30 years, has been retired for some time now, but that doesn’t stop her giving history lessons at the old Englewood School, located on her family’s

California farm. The lovingly restored building was constructed around 1850 as a home for a woodsman and later was used as apple barn. Then, in 1870 it began a new life as a schoolhouse.

Originally located in the nearby Englewood meadow, it was now moved its current site in 1978 by Velma’s late husband and his brother, Robert and Richard, who thought it would help keep

Velma busy in retirement. No nails had been used in the original construction, so each piece of wood had to be carefully marked and the building was reassembled(重裝)on its new site. The brothers worked with much care and hard work to ensure a perfect fit of mitered(斜接的)corners.

After the relocation, Velma and her family furnished the school with some of its original desks. They also added a collection of schoolbooks, the oldest dating back to 1845. Perhaps the school’s most cherished souvenir is the diploma of student Hettie Essig, who graduated on June 30, 1904. Hettie’s daughter, Flora, presented Velma with the precious keepsake.

Nowadays Velma gives tours to local schoolchildren and other groups, who learn what it was like to attend school back in the good old days. She has kids ring the school bell, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing “Good Morning to You” as they might have done in days gone by. Then, with twinkling eyes and much enthusiasm, she tells the history of the school, and gives a short sample lesson.

1.The Englewood School was originally built as __________.

A. a man’ s house B. a schoolhouse

C. a restroom D. an apple barn

2.Which word can best describe the school’s being relocated?

A. Inspiring B. Refreshing

C. fashionable D. Challenging

3.What does the underlined part “the precious keepsake” in Para.4 mean?

A. The school’s original supplies

B. The collection of schoolbooks

C. The oldest schoolbook

D. The diploma of Hettie Essig.

4.Which can serve as the best title of the passage?

A. The Good Old Days in the Schoolhouse

B. A Mysterious Building with a Long History

C. A Historic One-room Schoolhouse

D. A Teacher Devoted to Restoring Old Buildings

As it is known to us, fewer and fewer students do sports regularly, what makes them weak and easily tired. There are many reasons about this. First of all, some of the students complained that they have too many homework, resulting in less time to take exercise. Beside, some of them think that it is very difficulty for them to keep doing exercise, because it is a very hard thing.

Because lack of physical activities, many students are in poor health. I suggest that our school must take measures to encourage more students to take part in sports. For us students, no matter what busy we are, it is necessary to spare some time to do exercise.

It’s not what you look at that matters;it's what you see.

——Henry David Thoreau

Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art.

Why slow?

When people look slowly at a piece of art, they make discoveries. The most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert. And that's an exciting discovery. It unlocks passion and creativity and helps to create more art lovers.

How does it work?

One day each year, people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then meet together over lunch to talk about their experience. That's it. Simple by design, the goal is to focus on the art. In fact, Slow Art Day works quite well this way.

By the numbers

Over l, 200 individual Slow Art Day events have taken place since its official launch in 2010. Slow Art Day events have taken place on all seven continents.

700 venues (museums, galleries, artist studios, sculpture parks, public art sites. etc.) have hosted Slow Art Day events.

Participants love Slow Art Day

Feedback on this simple event has been overwhelmingly positive. Here's a sample:

“I loved taking the time to just 'be' with the works, particularly pieces I might otherwise walk by. It's a much better way of doing the art museum than the usual idle ramble. Discussion afterwards was fun, interesting, informative and eye-opening. I look forward to doing it again."

Slow Art Day 2017 is Saturday, April 8, in museums and galleries worldwide. Join us and experience art differently.

B. encourages people to see art for themselves and discuss with experts

C. organizes people to look at art on their own and talk about their experience

D. inspires people to make discoveries about art works and create their own works

3.What can we learn about Slow Art Day from the text?

A. The year of 2017 will see the eighth Slow Art Day.

B. It happens once a year in all museums and galleries worldwide.

C. It has become an art festival celebrated on all seven continents.

D. Slow Art Day events have been held in over l, 200 different places.

Dear Lan Lan ,

I’m now writing to you at Hartsop,a village in the Lake District,a place to have most beautiful scenery(景色) in England,I come here to spend Christmas with an English couple. This was planned for overseas students to know the British ways of life by living with British families.

We came two days before Christmas and during our stay,we have had everything we expected:Christmas turkey,Christmas cake,Christmas puddings,Christmas parties and gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing(有趣的),but above all these,we are deeply touched by the hospitality(好客) of the family,Roger and Anne Marie.

Anne Marie is a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing dishes and showing us around. Roger, who is a doctor, knows a lot about China and still wants to know more. He plays us Chinese music and it seems to me he does better in that than we do. In the evenings,we all sit around the fireplace with Tim,a lovely dog,by our side. Like long? time ?no ?see friends,we talk about all the things that have happened or we hope to happen in our lives. There is always so much to tell and to know.

After three months away from home,we are again feeling how sweet a home can be. Roger and Anne Marie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring us a person?to?person feeling, instead of a British?to?Chinese feeling. They make us believe that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved.

How I wish Mum and Dad could meet them! How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you. We always talk about“when we go back home next year...”and soon we will turn this into“when we go back home THIS year...”for the New Year’s Day is coming. Miss you.

Love,

Gao Wen
