　　“No air conditioning? How can you sleep? ” a friend asks, horrified．I tell her my family has decided to shut the air conditioner off and reduce our electric bill．On this first night of our cost-cutting plan, it's only 85 degrees．We’re going to suffer, but the three kids complain anyway．

　　“It's too hot to sleep, ” my 13-year-old daughter complains．“I'm about to die from this heat, ” her brother complains down the hall．“Just try it tonight, ” I tell them．In truth I'm too tired to turn for long．My face is sweaty, but I lie quietly listening to the cricket choirs outside that remind me of childhood．

　　The neighbor's dog howls．Probably a passing squirrel．It's been years since I took the time to really listen to the night．

　　I think about grandma, who lived to 92 and still helped with my mom's gardening until just a few weeks before she died．And then, I'm back there at her house in the summer heat of my childhood．I move my pillow to the foot of grandma's bed and turn my face toward the open window．I turn the pillow, hunting for the cooler side．

　　Grandma saw me turn over and over．“If you just watch for the breeze(清風), ” she said, “you'll cool off and fall asleep．” I stare at the filmy white curtain, willing it to move．Lying still, waiting, I suddenly notice the life outside the window．The bug chorus．Neighbors, porch(門廊)-sitting late, speak in unclear words that calm me．

　　A UFO cult said on Saturday the world's second cloned(克隆)baby had been born to a Dutch woman but cloning experts swiftly dismissed the claim as a baseless stunt. (花招)

　　“A baby girl was born yesterday evening. The baby is healthy and the mother, too. ”Bart Overvliet, head of the Raelian movement's Dutch branch, told Reuters by telephone.

　　“There is no mason to believe this is anything other than a long drawn-out publicity stunt, ”he told Reuters.

　　Colnaid's claims have led to widespread doubt among mainstream scientific experts and the company has not yet to provide DNA samples or other evidence to support its claim.

　　Severino Antinori, an Italian fertility doctor involved in separate human cloning projects, said he thought the report of the record clone's birth was as fake as the first.

　　“This news makes me laugh. It's a mystery to me how anybody could believe these people who have no scientific track record. It is an absolute lie. ”He told Reuters.

　　I think it was my mother who taught me the meaning of honesty．Not because she actually was honest, but because she lied all the time．She felt that the easiest way out of any given situation was generally the best way out．And, for her, that generally meant telling a “l(fā)ittle white lie”．As a young child I thought it was kind of cool．And, naturally, when I would come to her with a concern or question wondering what I should do, she generally advised me to lie．

　　I started thinking of all the lies that I'd heard her tell．I remembered the time she told someone that her favorite restaurant had closed, because she didn't want to see them there anymore．Or the time she told Dad that she loved the lawn-mower he gave her for her birthday．Or when she claimed that our phone lines had been down when she was trying to explain why she hadn't been in touch with a friend of hers for weeks．And what bothered me even more were all the times she had involved me into her lies．Like the time she told my guidance counselor that I had to miss school for exploratory surgery, when she really needed me to babysit．And it even started to bother me when someone would call for her and she would ask me to tell　them that she wasn't there．
