Mr Hill is a young man of twenty-two. He joined the police as soon as he graduated from a famous university. He likes his job and tries his best to be an able officer. Once his colleague (同事) Mr Scott was ill and he was told to take his place---to train several new policemen who had hardly touched guns by then. None of them was good at shooting. A week passed but few of them could hit the targets (靶子). Mr Scott was worried about it, so did Mr Hill.

One day, when he was passing a school, he found there were a lot of small circles on the wall, which had been drawn with chalk. In every circle there was a bullet (子彈) hole. He was surprised at such a good marksmanship (槍法). He was eager to see the crack shot (神槍手). He hoped the crack shot would teach the new policemen to shoot.

From then on Mr Hill walked by the school every day. One afternoon he saw a boy shooting at the wall, holding an air gun. He was even more surprised and came up to him.

"How old are you, my little friend?" asked Mr Hill.

   "Eight," answered the boy.

"Eight?" Mr Hill couldn't help calling out. "I couldn't believe that all this had been done by you unless I saw it with my own eyes! How do you shoot at the circles?"

"That's easy, sir," the boy said with a smile. "I always shoot at the wall first!"

The story of how the song “Happy Birthday to You”came into being, began as a sweet one, which later soured. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kinder-garten(幼兒園), and Dr Patty Hill, the principal(院長,負責(zé)人)of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister's expertise(專長)in the area of Kin-dergarten Education, “Good Morning to All”was sure to be a success.

The sisters published the song in a collection entitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten”in 1893. Twenty-one years later, after Dr Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters' permission. To add insult(侮辱)to injury, he added a second verse, the familiar “Happy Birthday to You”.

Mr Coleman's addition of the second verse popularized the song and, finally, the sisters' original first verse disappeared. “Happy Birthday to You”, the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters' original title, “Good Morning to All”.

After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, took Mr Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed(確定), owned the melody(曲調(diào)). Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties(版稅)from it, whenever it is sung for commercial(商業(yè)的)purposes.

(1)The first verse of the song was written for ________.

      A.1893
      B.1914
