Is there anybody out there? For centuries human beings have been wondering. As we've gained greater understanding of the universe, however, our searches have taken on a more concrete form. Questions about aliens have become a subject for science rather than science fiction and philosophy.
Now a new cooperation(合作)between the Very Large Array observatory in New Mexico and the privately funded Seti Institute in California could mean that our curiosity about aliens is closer than ever before to being satisfied. Data from the VLA's 28 giant radio telescopes will be fed through a special supercomputer that will search for distant signals. Scientists who work at the Seti Institute said the announcement means their research is now “almost mainstream".
How likely it is that a signal will be found, and what this might mean, are hard questions to answer. Seti's existing projects haven't detected any life signals from other planets so far. But recent discoveries in space and Earth sciences have provided some encouragement to those who are enthusiastic about the likelihood, however remote, of detecting other civilizations.
While once it was thought that our solar system could be unique, since the discovery of the first exoplanet (a planet in another solar system) in the 1990s, thousands more have been located(確定位置). Around one in five stars are now thought to have a planet in their orbit in a so-called “habitable zone"—that is at a distance from the star where the temperature(neither too hot nor too cold) means that life is theoretically feasible.
If there is another life form somewhere, could it be as intelligent as us? Or cause a risk to us, as the physicist Stephen Hawking once warned? As investigations of Mars continue, our interest in the possibility of alien life appears clear—especially when conditions in our own earth appear even more unstable.
【1】What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Global cooperation helps to study aliens.
B.Searching for aliens is becoming a trend.
C.Aliens have caught wide attention globally.
D.There are many uncertainties about aliens study.
【2】What is the encouraging news to searchers for distant civilizations?
A.VLA has developed new radio telescopes.
B.Seti has detected signals from other planets.
C.More and more exoplanets have been found.
D.Other civilizations have been located in a habitable zone.
【3】What does the underlined word “feasible" in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Possible.B.Tough.
C.Easy.D.Certain.
【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Literature.B.Health.
C.Education.D.Science.

【4】D
Is there anybody out there? For centuries human beings have been wondering. As we've gained greater understanding of the universe, however, our searches have taken on a more concrete form(有人在嗎? Scientists who work at the Seti Institute said the announcement means their research is now “almost mainstream"(在Seti研究所工作的科學(xué)家說(shuō),這一聲明意味著他們的研究現(xiàn)在幾乎是主流了)可知,文章前兩段主要論述尋找外星人正成為一種趨勢(shì)。故選B。
【2】
But recent discoveries in space and Earth sciences have provided some encouragement to those who are enthusiastic about the likelihood, however remote, of detecting other civilizations.(但是最近在空間和地球科學(xué)上的發(fā)現(xiàn)給那些對(duì)探測(cè)其他文明的可能性充滿熱情的人們提供了一些鼓勵(lì))和下文While once it was thought that our solar system could be unique, since the discovery of the first exoplanet (a planet in another solar system) in the 1990s, thousands more have been located(確定位置)(雖然人們一度認(rèn)為我們的太陽(yáng)系可能是獨(dú)一無(wú)二的,但自從20世紀(jì)90年代發(fā)現(xiàn)第一顆系外行星以來(lái),又發(fā)現(xiàn)了數(shù)千顆系外行星)可知,對(duì)于尋找遙遠(yuǎn)文明的人來(lái)說(shuō),越來(lái)越多的系外行星被發(fā)現(xiàn)是一個(gè)令人鼓舞的消息,故選C。
【3】
根據(jù)Around one in five stars are now thought to have a planet in their orbit in a so-called “habitable zone"—that is at a distance from the star where the temperature(neither too hot nor too cold) means that life is theoretically feasible.

My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (老年癡呆癥) last summer. Suddenly, it was difficult for me to accept that the roles were now changed — my mother became my child, and I became her mother. I became impatient, argued with her, once I even yelled at her. Gradually, I was used to this kind of life. Now I am able to deal with her and the situation better. I have learned a lot of life lessons from the experience.
My mother reacts very sensitively to my feelings. That is typical of Alzheimer’s patients. When I visit her, feeling hectic and tense, she reacts immediately, takes on my mood, and becomes nervous and negative. But when I appear cheerful and attentive, she is happy. This has taught me to pay more attention to my own feelings when I am with other people.
Through the illness my mother has developed a childlike tactlessness (不得體). Eating out in restaurants, for example, is a bit embarrassing when she shouts at the waiter that the food is so bad or talks about people at the next table in a loud voice. Of course I make sure that my mother doesn’t hurt anyone, but I’ve stopped complaining about others and have become more tolerant.
I have also learned that everything has special value. When my mother got sick I didn’t want to burden my two daughters with it. They are young and have enough going on with their education, and starting their careers. I felt that it was simply my job as my mother’s daughter. The most wonderful discovery I’ve made through my mother’s disease may be that my children not only offer to help me, but that they take care of my mother on their own actively. They visit her often, play cards with her, and look at photo albums together with her. It shows me that it’s all worth it.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.How I Cared for My Sick Mother.B.How I Became More Tolerant.
