Encouraged by the success of its first manned space mission, China says it is looking to launch(發(fā)射)another Shenzhou spacecraft within "one or two years' time" and is pushing ahead with plans to develop a permanently manned presence iu space.

In comments reported just hours after the Shenzhou V's safe return to Earth, the official Xinhua news agency quoted(引用)a leading space official as saying China's next steps would be to work on launching a space laboratory and then a space station into orbit(軌道).

"The successful mission of Shenzhou V is the first step of China's space program." the agency quoted Zhang Qingwei as saying.

Although Zhang gave few details and no specific timescale for the plans, the announcement is the clearest official statement to date concerning China's plans for space exploration.

Speaking later at a Beijing news conference, Xie Mingbao, director of the manned space office, said he expected to launch another Shenzhou capsule before the end of 2005.

"In one or two years' time, I think Shenzhou VI will be launched." Xie said in response to a reporter's question.

Zhang, the second most senior officer in charge of the country's space program, said the next major tasks to tackle would be to perfect orbital docking technologies and procedures.

Precise docking between spacecraft and orbiting modules is essential to placing a space lab in orbit, Xinhua quoted Zhang as saying.

He did not say whether the proposed space lab would be manned or conduct experiments using automated equipment.

Beijing has not been involved in the U.S.a(chǎn)nd Russian-led International Space Station(ISS), although there has been speculation(思索)that China may be invited to join in the near future.Although earlier reports in Chinese media have speculated on the future course of the space program, Zhang's comments are the clearest indication yet that such plans have high level official support.

Aside from the space station, Chinese scientists are also reported to be working on plans to send unmanned probes to the moon with a view to eventually landing a Chinese astronaut on the lunar surface.

Beijing(AFP)Oct.17, 2005-China’s second manned space mission returned safely to Earth early Monday after a successful five –day flight, in the latest chapter in China’s ambitious drive to become a global space power.

Astronauts Fei Junling and Nie Haisheng were given a clean bill of health after the re-entry capsule(返回艙)of their Shenzhou VI spacecraft landed on Earth on a parachute, ending up in Inner Mongolia, Xinhua news agency said.

“Our journey in space was very smooth. The living and working conditions inside the cabin were very good, and our health is okay. Thanks,” Fei said on state television, with a smile.

Appearing from the capsule, television pictures showed the two took a few seconds to adjust to the Earth’s gravity, before begin presented with flowers and waving to gathered recovery teams and ground control staff.

Mission control declared the 115-hour space flight a success, Xinhua reported.

A member of one of the recovery teams reported that the capsule landed upright after touching down at 4∶32 am(20∶32 GMT Sunday), just one kilometer(1,100 yards)from the intended landing site, it added.

The flight was China’s second-ever manned space mission following the historic Shenzhou V, which in October 2003 made China the third nation after the former Soviet Union and the United States to put a man into space.

During his 21-hour first flight in 2003, astronaut Yang Liwei never left his seat in the re-entry capsule nor took off his space suit.In contrast, Fei and Nie’s flight saw them leave the re-entry capsule and enter the orbital capsule(軌道艙), taking off their heavy suits and putting on ordinary work clothes so they could move around easily.

To remove worries that China could use space for military purposes, Premier Wen Jiabao said the purpose of the mission was to conduct experiments “entirely for peaceful purposes.”

The Chinese government also hopes to use the manned space program to inspire patriotism(愛國精神)and instill a curiosity in science and technology among Chinese population.

(2)

What can you infer from the passage?

[ ]

A.

It took Fei Junling and Nie Haisheng only two years to get prepared for the space trip.

B.

Astronauts have to wear large and heavy space suits in pace all the time.

C.

China wants to catch up with the United States and Russia in the field of space and controls the profitable field.

China's astronaut, 38-year-old Yang Liwei returned safely to earth Thursday morning, when his craft Shenzhou V touched down as scheduled after more than 21 hours in the earth's orbit. Chinese premier Wen Jiabao called the landmark debut flight a “complete success”. The descent capsule (返回艙) carrying Lt. Col. Yang Liwei touched down on the grasslands of the Gobi Desert, in central Inner Mongolia at 6:23 a. m. Thursday (Beijing Time), the Beijing-based China's Aerospace Command and Control Center said. Minutes later, Yang grabbed the capsule hatch with his hand, pulled himself out, smiled and waved at recovery teams and reporters. “It is a splendid moment in the history of my motherland and also the greatest day of my life,” Yang, a former flight pilot from Northeast China's Liaoning Province, said immediately after emerging. In an interview with CCTV, China's state television, Yang said he was “feeling excellent”. Shenzhou V landed at dawn, 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) from its designed landing target, the officials said. “The spaceship operated well,” the astronaut Yang Liwei said in his first publicized comments. “I feel very good and I am proud of my motherland.” After a physical exam on spot, Yang's condition was found as “good”. Li Jinai, the commander of China's manned space program, called Yang a “space hero” and a “national hero”. Following Yang's touchdown China's premier Wen Jiabao immediately spoke to Yang from Beijing's Command and Control Centre and offered his congratulations.

Within hours, Chinese space officials announced that the country's space dreams will continue with a “Shenzhou Ⅵ” mission, most possibly within a year. They said China also had worked out plans to conduct space walking by its astronauts, and eventually build up a space station. However, Chinese scientists ruled out building a space shuttle, like the United States.

Yang's flight came four decades after the former Soviet Union and the United States pioneered manned spaceflight. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth in April 1961. One month later, the United States launched Alan B. Shepard Jr.
